There are two common ways of telling the time.

  1. Formal way

    We say the hours first and then the minutes.

      Examples:
    • It’s eight fifteen. (08:15)
    • It’s seven thirty. (07:30)
  2. Popular way

    We say the minutes first and then the hours.

    We use past after minutes.

    We use to before hours.

      Examples:
    • It’s fifteen minutes past nine. (09:15)
    • It’s ten minutes to one. (12:50)

Another possibility for past is:

  • a quarter past. Example: It´s a quarter past eleven. (11:15)
  • a quarter to. Example: It´s a quarter to three. (02:45)
