Let’s study Indefinite articles.

Instructions: Look at the following information about Indefinite Articles:

What is an article?

Articles are words used to define nouns as specific or unspecific.

A or AN are used before nouns that introduce something or someone NOT mentioned before. A / AN is always singular.

Examples: He is a lawyer.

  • She is an architect.
  • The Mediterranean is a sea, not an ocean.

We use “a” if the word after it starts with a consonant sound. Example:

  • a city
  • a factory
  • a hotel

We use “an” if the word after it starts with a vowel sound. Example:

  • an elephant
  • an apple
  • an engineer

We use “a” or “an” before jobs. Examples: a teacher; an engineer.

Be careful with words like “university” and “hour”. We say “university” with a “y” sound. So “a university” is correct.

We say “hour” with a silent “h”. So, “an hour” is correct.
