Instructions: Read the text about the economy in Malaysia. Look at the words in bold.

Some people say that since its Independence, Malaysia has been one of the best economic records in Asia, with its GDP growing at an average of 5.6% per annum for almost 50 years. The economy has traditionally been fuelled by its natural resources, but is expanding in the sectors of science, tourism, commerce and medical tourism. Today, Malysia has a newly industrialised market economy, ranked third largest in Southeast Asia and 29th largest in the world. It is a founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the East Asia Summit and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and a member of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the Non-Aligned Movement.

Let’s study Reported Speech sentences in Present.

Instructions: Read about Reported Speech sentences in Present.

Direct Speech repeats or quotes, the exact words spoken.

When we use direct speech in writing, we place the words spoken between quotation marks (“ “) and there is no change in these words. Examples:

My teachers says: “I am always in Malaysia during summer.”

A student says: “I am also in Malaysia during summer”

Reported Speech is when one person retells something someone else says.

In English we can use “that” or not. Examples:

My teacher says (that) she is always in Malaysia during summer.

A student says (that) he is also in Malaysia during summer.

If the verb “say” or “tell” is in the present tense, we just write 'He says' (or she says) and then the sentence:

  • Direct speech: I live in George Town.
  • Reported speech: She says (that) she lives in George Town.

We don't need to change the tense, but sometimes we need to change the 'person' from 'I' to 'she' or ‘he’. We also may need to change words like 'my' and 'your'.
