Instructions: Read the text. Look at the underlined words.

Our teacher explained us that the social status of women in Pakistan varies and depends considerably on social class, upbringing, and region due to uneven socioeconomic development and the impact of social influences on women’s lives in the country. Pakistan has had a long history of feminist activism since its birth. Since 1947 the APWA and Aurat Foundation, both influential feminist organisations, have played strong roles in raising awareness about women’s rights in the country.

Overall, the status of women has improved due to enhanced religious and educational instruction. However, when looked at in a global perspective, the situation in Pakistan is quite alarming. In 2015 the World Economic Forum ranked Pakistan as the second-worst country in the world in terms of gender equality.

Getting started: Relation to the opposite gender

Instructions: Read the text. Then do the activity suggested.

The relationship of women to the opposite gender is culturally that of gender subordination. Women are traditionally assigned, or assumed to have, certain roles related mainly to domestic chores while men are considered the breadwinners and professionals of the family. In urban areas of the country, more and more women are assuming professional roles and contributing to family economics, but the ratio of these women compared with those in traditional roles is small. The occupations most favoured by females and acceptable to society are teaching and tutoring.
