Global warming and climate change are terms for the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system and its related effects. Multiple lines of scientific evidence show that the climate system is warming. Although the increase of near-surface atmospheric temperature is the measure of global warming often reported in the popular press, most of the additional energy stored in the climate system since 1970 has gone into the oceans. The rest has melted ice and warmed the continents and atmosphere. Many of the observed changes since the 1950s are unprecedented over tens to thousands of years.

Getting started: Global warming and human activities

Instructions: Keep on reading about Global Warming to do the activity suggested.

Scientific understanding of global warming is increasing. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported in 2015 that scientists were more than 95% certain that global warming is mostly being caused by human (anthropogenic) activities, mainly increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide (CO2). Human activities have led to carbon dioxide concentrations above levels not seen in hundreds of thousands of years. Methane and other, often much more potent, greenhouse gases are also rising along with CO2. Currently, about half of the carbon dioxide released from the burning of fossil fuels remains in the atmosphere. The rest is absorbed by vegetation and the oceans. Climate model projections summarized in the report indicated that during the 21st century the global surface temperature is likely to rise a further 0.3 to 1.7 °C (0.5 to 3.1 °F) for their lowest emissions scenario and 2.6 to 4.8 °C (4.7 to 8.6 °F) for the highest emissions scenario. These finding have been recognized by the national science academies of the major industrialized nations and are not disputed by any scientific body of national or international standing.

Let’s check out the Present Continuous Tense.

Instructions: Read the information about the Present Continuous Tense.

Remember: We use the present continuous tense to talk about activities happening now:

Examples:

  • The Obama family is smiling very happy.
  • President Obama is holding hands with his daughters.

Use the present continuous tense to talk about activities happening around now, and not necessarily this moment.

Examples:

  • American people are planning a big party for Halloween.
  • They are preparing their costumes.

Remember the word order:

Observed environmental effects

Instructions: Fill in the blanks with the right form of the verb To Be and the verb in parenthesis.

Anthropogenic forcing likely (contribute) to some of the observed changes, including sea level rise, changes in climate extremes (such as the number of warm and cold days), declines in Arctic sea ice extent, glacier retreat, and greening of the Sahara.

During the 21st century, glaciers and snow cover are projected to continue their widespread retreat. Projections of declines in Arctic sea ice (vary). Recent projections suggest that Arctic summers could be ice-free (defined as ice extent less than 1 million square km) as early as 2025-2030.

"Detection" is the process of demonstrating that climate (change) in some defined statistical sense, without providing a reason for that change. Detection does not imply attribution of the detected change to a particular cause. "Attribution" of causes of climate change is the process of establishing the most likely causes for the detected change with some defined level of confidence. Detection and attribution may also be applied to observed changes in physical, ecological and social systems.

Scientific discussion

Instructions: Choose the right options in the following text.

There is continuing discussion through published peer-reviewed scientific papers, which is being / are being assessed by scientists who is working / are working in the relevant fields taking part in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The scientific consensus agree that observed warming in recent decades has increased primarily due to human activities which is increasing / are increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Science academies is calling / are calling on world leaders for policies to cut global emissions.

In the scientific literature, there is a strong consensus that global Surface temperatures is increasing / are increasing mainly by human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases. No scientific body of national or international standing disagrees with this view.
