Instructions: Read the text. Look at the letters in bold.

The name "Bahamas" comes from the Spanish “baja mar” meaning shallow sea, and is an archipelago of over 700 islands stretching over 258,998 square km in the western Atlantic Ocean. The Lucayan Indians were the original inhabitants: they managed to live throughout The Bahamas between 900 and 1500 A.D. Eighty-five percent of the Bahamian population is of African descent. Many Africans arrived in the Bahama Islands when they were a staging area for the slave trade in the early 1800's. Others arrived with thousands of British loyalists who left the American colonies at the time of the Revolutionary War.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the New World on the island of San Salvador in the eastern Bahamas. After observing the shallow sea around the islands, he said "baja mar" (low water or sea).

Getting started: The Commonwealth of the Bahama Islands

Instructions: Read the following information to do the activity suggested.

The Bahamas were a Crown colony from 1717 until they were granted internal self-government in 1964. The islands moved toward greater autonomy in 1968 after the overwhelming victory in general elections of the Progressive Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Lynden O. Pindling, over the predominantly white United Bahamians Party. With its new mandate from the black population (85% of Bahamians), Pindling's government negotiated a new constitution with Britain under which the colony became the Commonwealth of the Bahama Islands in 1969. On July 10, 1973, the Bahamas became an independent nation. The Bahama Islands became the free and sovereign Commonwealth of The Bahamas on 10 July 1973, ending 325 years of British rule (but remains part of the Commonwealth). The Bahamas, with over 270 years of democratic rule, is one of the most politically stable countries in the world.
