Miami, officially the City of Miami, is the cultural, economic and financial center of South Florida. Miami is the seat of Miami-Dade County, the most populous county in the state. Tourism is one of the city’s largest industries. The city’s frequent portrayal in music, films, and popular culture has made the city and its landmarks recognizable worldwide. Some of its most popular tourist destinations include the beaches, South Beach, Lincoln Road, Bayside Marketplace and Downtown Miami. The Art Deco District in South Beach, is reputed as one of the most glamorous in the world for its nightclubs, beaches, historical buildings, and shopping.

Let’s study three different forms to express the future.

Instructions: Read about three forms to express the future.

We can use the Present Continuous, Be + Going to and the auxiliary Will to talk about the future.

  1. We can use the Present Continuous to talk about arrangements for events at a time later than now. There is a suggestion that more than one person is aware of the event, and that some preparation has already happened.

    Look at the examples:

    • Positive: I am leaving to London tomorrow.
    • Interrogative: Is your family going with you?
    • Negative: We are not visiting any relatives.

  2. We can also express the future with the auxiliary verb Will when:

    1. We make a promise or express an intention or voluntary action. The intention can be negative, when we refuse to do something.

      Examples:

      • Interrogative: Will you make some coffee?
      • Negative: She won’t do it alone.
    2. We make a prediction about the future.

      Examples:

      • Positive: I will be very busy on weekend.
      • She will love this present.
    3. We are not sure about the future. In this case, we use Will with expressions like ‘I hope’, ‘I think’, ‘possible’, ‘probably’.

      Examples:

      • Positive: I hope she’ll come.
      • I think we will get along well.
    4. Express an order or prohibition.

      Examples:

      • Negative: You will not leave until you are finished.
      • Positive: You will do what I say!
  3. Be + Going to is used:

    1. To express a plan or decision.

      Examples:

      • Positive: Tomorrow, I am going to take her to the movies.
      • Interrogative: Are you going to start swimming lessons next week?
      • Negative: She isn’t going to meet him tonight.
    2. To express a certainty about the future based on evidence in the present:

      Examples:

      • Positive: They are going to have a baby in May!
      • Negative: It is sunny. It isn’t going to rain.
