Canada is a country in North America. Its ten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second-largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area. Canada’s border with the United States is the world’s longest land border. The majority of the country has a cold or severely cold winter climate, but southerly areas are warm in summer. Canada is sparsely populated, the majority of its land territory being dominated by forest and tundra and the Rocky Mountains. About four-fifths of the country’s populations of 36 million people is urbanized and live near the southern border. Its capital is Ottawa. Its largest metropolis is Toronto. Other major urban areas include Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Quebec City.

Getting started: A federal Dominion

Instructions: Read the following information to do the activity suggested.

The land now called Canada has been inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the 15th century, British and French expeditions explored, and later settled the Atlantic coast, with the first establishment of a region called Canada occurring in 1534. As a consequence of various conflicts, the majority of New France was ceded to the British Empire in 1763. Subsequently, the United Kingdom gained and lost territories within British North American until it was left, in the late 18th century, with what mostly geographically comprises Canada today. Pursuant to the British North America Act, on July 1, 1867, the colonies of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia joined together to form a federal Dominion under the name “Canada”. This began an accretion of provinces and territories to the mostly self-governing Dominion to the present ten provinces and three territories forming modern Canada.

Let’s study how adverbs function.

Instructions: Look at the information about adverbs.

An adverb is a word that describes or modifies a verb, and adjective or another adverb

  1. When modifying a verb, adverbs simply explain most about the action. Example:
    • The boy runs quickly
    • I walk slowly
  2. When describing an adjective or other adverbs, they provide more information about that other descriptive word. Example:
    • Describing an adjective: That very pretty girl is my Canadian friend.
In this sentences “very” is an adverb describing the word “pretty” (adjective).
    • Describing an adverb David runs very quickly
In this sentence, “quickly” is an adverb describing the word “runs”, and “Very” is another adverb, this time describing the word “quickly” (adverb).

Adverbs have different types according to what you want to say. These types are:

  • Time adverbs: tell us about when something happens: already, now, soon, tomorrow, etc.
  • Place adverbs: are ones that describe where something happens or where something is: here, there, upstairs, nearby, etc.
  • Manner adverbs: tell us about the way something happens or is done: carefully, badly, loudly, quietly, quickly etc.
  • Frequency adverbs: are ones that describe how often something is done: always, never, usually, sometimes, etc.
  • Focusing adverbs: point to something: especially, just, only, simply, etc.
  • Quantity adverbs: express the degree to which something is done or is: many, more, fewer, a lot, etc.
  • Degree adverbs: express degrees of qualities, properties, states, conditions and relations: very, too, lots, enough, etc.
